Virtual Artists and Digital Avatars Part 1 : The Evolution of the Virtual Artist

What roles do digital avatars, virtual artists, and AI-driven personas have in reshaping music and creativity in the entertainment industry?

How easy is it to raise an artist?

Let's see: the journey begins with discovery and the signing of a contract. Then the team spends endless hours in the studio perfecting their sound. And all the while, they are building a brand that defines the artist, from their style to their persona. Then comes the biggest gamble: whether or not the audience will resonate with the artist. It may seem simple, but it’s a long, incredibly demanding process.

So, what if an artist could be custom-made? With every bit of them tailored to create the ultimate entertainer. Although it sounds stranger than fiction, these are more than ideas now; they exist in reality.

Look, I don’t know whose idea it first was. But over the past few decades, between online avatar games and the leaps in artificial intelligence, the idea has steadily evolved. Almost like a multi-generational group project: the notion that computer-generated characters capable of mirroring human expressions and movements, and powered by AI, could be the future of the music industry.

The Pixelated Persona: Digital Avatars

Digital avatars are computer-generated characters that represent a user, real or fictional, within a virtual environment. Depending on the sophistication of its design, digital avatars can use Natural Language Processing (NLP), computer vision, and emotion recognition to interact with people.

Digital avatars have come a long way from their early days as simple graphical user interfaces (GUIs) to evolving into public personas taking the form of virtual artists and even virtual influencers.

Virtual Artists

A virtual artist is a specialized type of digital avatar, created specifically to produce and perform music or visual art. While often controlled by a team of humans, the persona itself exists entirely online, limitless and untethered.

Remember Alvin and the Chipmunks? Though not digital avatars in the modern sense, they were an early precursor to the concept of virtual bands. Their creator, Ross Bagdasarian, recorded his own voice and then sped it up to achieve the signature high-pitched sound of the characters Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.

Then there is Hatsune Miku, originally a piece of vocal synthesizer software, known as a Vocaloid. Its persona is depicted as a young girl with long turquoise hair. What began as a tool for musicians soon grew into a global sensation with holographic live performances at music festivals and a thriving fanbase.

Another mention is Lil Miquela, not strictly a virtual artist but a CGI-generated influencer who collaborated with brands and even released her own music. These avatars are fast blurring the lines between worlds: the digital and physical.

A New Canvas For Expression

One could argue that the rise of digital avatars in mainstream entertainment is simply a new outlet for human creativity. These avatars allow a space where creators can provide not just interactive but also immersive experiences.

After all, behind every digital character is an actual person or team of people making sure it runs seamlessly. And with virtual artists, there is a semblance that the pressure of personal branding is lifted. Allowing opportunity for experimentation with sounds, style, and genres, without having to risk their own brand or identity.
