Extract works into a new file
Use this tool to make a new CWR file from the works you choose. CWR (Common Works Registration) is the text format publishers use to register works with collecting societies.
Your file is never uploaded. The new file is built in your browser tab.
What the tool builds
The tool writes a new file header, a header and trailer for each group, and a file trailer. It renumbers the records and recounts them. It copies the content of each record you chose exactly, apart from its numbers and counts. Records that sit outside any work are not copied, and the tool tells you how many and on which lines. If your copy has changes from other tools, the new file includes them.
Steps
- Open the Tools tab and select "Extract works".
- Choose works from the list "Works for the new file". Use "Filter by title or work #" to narrow it. The "Show only" buttons filter by "With errors", "With warnings" or "No problems".
- Use "Select all" or "Select shown" to choose many at once, and "Clear all" or "Clear shown" to empty the choice. Shift and click chooses a range.
- Decide on the header. By default the new file gets today's date and time (UTC), as a new transmission. Tick "Keep the header's dates and time" to copy the header unchanged.
- Decide on line endings. The tool writes one line ending for the whole new file, the first one your file uses. You can instead choose the CR LF option.
- Select "Make the new file" with the number of works.
- Watch the stages: "Building the new file", "Reading it back", "Checking its structure" and "Comparing every record with yours". Select "Stop" to cancel. Nothing is made if you stop.
- When the file is ready, the three checks are shown: Read back, Structure and Record contents. Select "Download new file", or "Check the new file here" to open it in the checker. Your original stays as it is.
When the tool will not make a file
If any of the three checks fails, you get no file. The message says whether the cause is likely in your file or in the tool. The tool also refuses when:
- nothing is chosen;
- your file has no file header (HDR);
- the header ends before its dates (tick "Keep the header's dates and time" or fix the header);
- a chosen record is shorter than its numbered prefix;
- your file mixes text encodings;
- a chosen record carries the number of a different work;
- you chose an acknowledgement (ACK) or the EXC that continues it. The tool does not copy that pair.
A passed set of checks is not a registration. A society applies its own rules.
Leave out later duplicates
After Find duplicate works, you can open this tool with every work chosen except the later copies.
What to check next
- Open the new file with "Check the new file here".
- Read any problem it shows. See Read your results.
- Check it in the CWR checker.
