Writers, publishers and shares
Use this guide to fill in the WRITER and PUBLISHER rows of the CWR creator template. CWR (Common Works Registration) is the text format publishers use to register works with collecting societies.
Your file is never uploaded.
Controlled or not
The Controlled column is required on every WRITER and PUBLISHER row.
- Y: you represent this writer or publisher and collect for them.
- N: you do not. The party is on the work so the shares add up, and nothing more.
A controlled party also gets collection shares and territories in the file. A party you do not control does not. If no writer or publisher on a work is controlled, the creator warns you that the file will carry no territories or collection for you on that work.
The creator also reads YES, TRUE or 1 as yes, and NO, FALSE or 0 as no.
Roles
- Writers. Use C (composer), A (author of the words), or CA (both). You can also use AR for an arranger, AD for an adaptor, SA for a sub-author, SR for a sub-arranger, or TR for a translator. Every work needs at least one writer with the role C, A, or CA. One person who is both composer and author goes on one row with the role CA.
- Publishers. Use E, the original publisher. An empty role means E. The creator does not write other publisher roles.
A work with an arranger, adaptor, sub-arranger, sub-author or translator needs more care. A controlled composer or author with no share then needs one of these writers, also controlled, who has a share.
Identifiers on a party
A controlled publisher needs an IPI name number. A publisher whose name is the name of a society needs one too. See Fix row problems.
Owned and collected shares
There is one column for each right and each kind of share.
Right | Owned | Collected |
|---|---|---|
Performing (PR) | PR owned % | PR collected % |
Mechanical (MR) | MR owned % | MR collected % |
Synchronization (SR) | SR owned % | SR collected % |
- Owned is the share of the right the party owns. An empty cell means 0.
- Collected is the share you collect for a controlled party. An empty cell means the same as the owned share. A party you do not control has no collected share.
Write a share as a percentage, such as 50 or 33.33. A percent sign is fine. A comma works as the decimal point when there is no dot. The creator keeps two decimal places. A share with more places is an error, unless the extra places are zeros. A share is between 0 and 100.
How the shares must add up
For each right on each work:
- The owned shares of all writers and publishers add up to 100%, or the right is left empty on every row. The creator allows a margin of 0.06%. Three equal writers can be 33.33, 33.33, and 33.34.
- For the performing right, a publisher owns at most 50%, and all the publishers together own at most 50%.
- For the performing right, the writers' shares add up to 0% or to at least 50%.
- A controlled publisher owns a share in at least one of the three rights.
- A controlled publisher's performing share collected equals its performing share owned. Leave the PR collected % cell empty to use the owned share.
- Across all controlled parties, the shares collected in one territory add up to no more than 100%.
A controlled party that owns a share but collects none gets a warning. The file would have no collection record for that party.
Link a writer to a publisher
When the work has a publisher you control, and the writers do not own all of every right, the file must say which publisher each controlled writer is published by. Use the Publisher column on the WRITER row.
- Give the publisher a short Party key on its PUBLISHER row, such as P1.
- On the writer's row, write that key in Publisher. You can write the publisher's IPI name number instead.
- For more than one publisher, separate them with semicolons:
P1;P2.
The key must belong to a PUBLISHER row on the same work. A key can repeat from work to work, but not inside one work. The publisher you name must be controlled, and a controlled writer can be linked only to a controlled publisher.
Here is work EX-0001 of the example file, cut down.
Row type | Party key | Controlled | Role | Name | PR owned % | MR owned % | SR owned % | Publisher |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
PUBLISHER | P1 | Y | E | Example Songs Publishing | 25 | 50 | 50 | |
PUBLISHER | P2 | Y | E | Sample Tunes Limited | 25 | 50 | 50 | |
WRITER | Y | CA | Quillfeather | 25 | P1 | |||
WRITER | Y | C | Marblehaven | 25 | P2 |
The performing shares add up to 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 = 100. The mechanical and synchronization shares add up to 50 + 50 = 100.
The same person twice
Two writers, or two publishers, on a work with the same IPI name number, or the same first name and name when there is no number, get a warning. The file gives both one party number. Use one row, or give different people different IPI name numbers.
What to check next
- Add your sheet and read the problems table. See Fix row problems.
- After you build, open the file in the checker and read the shares. See Owned shares and Fix share totals and implied decimals.
