Clean identifiers
Use this tool to write IPI Name numbers, IPI Base numbers, ISWCs, and ISRCs in their written form. CWR (Common Works Registration) is the text format publishers use to register works with collecting societies.
Your file is never uploaded. The tool changes a copy and leaves your original file as it is.
What the tool does
Identifier | What the tool writes |
|---|---|
IPI Name # | 11 digits. It removes spaces, dashes and dots, then adds zeros on the left. |
IPI Base # |
|
ISWC |
|
ISRC | 12 letters and digits. It upper-cases and removes dashes. |
The tool never changes a check digit and never guesses a missing digit.
Zeros on an IPI Name number
The tool adds zeros to an IPI Name number only when the padded number passes its check digits. For example, 123471 becomes 00000123471, because the last two digits are the ones the first nine give.
If the padded number fails its check digits, the tool leaves the field alone and lists it under "Needs a human". A number like that is more likely wrong than short, and padding it would give a wrong number the right shape. A value that is only zeros is also left alone, because it means no number was entered. The check rests on a secondary source, so look each listed number up in the IPI database.
Steps
- Open the Tools tab and select "Clean identifiers".
- Under "Clean", tick the kinds you want: IPI Name #, IPI Base #, ISWC, ISRC. Each shows its count. If you tick none, the tool asks you to tick at least one.
- Read the list. Each row shows the line, the value now, and the value after. Tags explain the change, such as "Zeros added", "Separators removed", "Upper case", "I and hyphens added", "I added" or "Hyphens fixed". Select a row to see the line in the file.
- Read "Left as they are". These values cannot be written in the correct form without guessing, for example, an IPI number with letters, or an ISWC without its
T. Fix them by hand. - Read "Needs a human". Look each number up.
- Select "Apply" with the number of changes. The tool makes them all in your copy. The list shows only the first changes of each kind, and Apply makes all of them.
- Wait for the check of your copy. It reports how many problems were fixed and how many are new.
To fix one identifier, open its problem in the Problems tab and select the Fix button, or use "Fix one identifier". Select "Clean all identifiers instead" to switch to the whole file.
Limits
- A dashed ISWC is longer than its field, so the file holds a cut-off value. The tool skips it.
- The tool checks the shape of an ISWC only. It does not check an ISWC check digit.
- A wrong IPI check digit stays wrong. The checker reports it as
ID-IPI-CHKorID-IPIB-CHK.
What to check next
- Use "Undo" if a change is not what you wanted.
- Select "Download copy". See Download your copy.
- Check the result in the CWR checker.
